Welcome To The KB7YOU Ham Radio Site

Short Wave Radio - Lately, I have been tuning in to SW broadcasts and I've found a great site for finding programs. Check out the WWW Shortwave Listening Guide .

Installing Comet trunk lip mount on my Saturn station wagon . I installed  2 mounts, one for use with a Comet SBB-7Vhf/Uhf antenna and one for use with Ham Stick antennas.

Backpack and Portable

(Pictures) I finished the basic designs for a mount with vertical and dipole supports that hold Ham Sticks and my military whips. My goal was to create a light weight, simple, easy to match HF antenna for portable use. Click the pictures link to see some pictures I took while trying out different designs and mounting options.
I have used these antennas and several variations over the last few years on camping trips, side-of-the-road operations and even in my front yard on occasion. Several things can really help when you are using small, home made, portable antennas: A notebook and good note taking skills; an antenna analyzer of some sort (if you are into such things - I am) and an antenna tuner. A few years back I had a chance to evaluate and write-up the QPack antenna tuner; I'm still using it and that's about the best recommendation I can give! My original review is below.

Yahoo Groups - HFPack group .
This is an excellent group to join if you are interested in portable or QRP operations. The folks in this group are knowledgeable and friendly. The HF Pack group also has several on-air nets throughout the week.

KB7YOU Operations

KB7YOU Operations Manual - This is my operations manual. It contains shortcuts, tips and notes that I use while operating my station. Although it is specific to my needs you might find it interesting. An operations manual is something that every operator should have. If you have any comments or questions please feel free to ask!

My daughter Tori at age 2 - She is fascinated by my radios and test equipment. She loves listening and playing with the knobs. Tori has gotten very good at operating my equipment. Her favorite buttons are the VFO and power switches. A new ham in the making?

Update February 2010 - Five Years Later
I cannot believe that five years have passed - It's February, 2010 and Tori is now a 7 year-old first grader. She still uses my equipment and space as her personal classroom and we spend a lot of time working on projects together. Her favorite project areas are robotics, photographing her toys, plants and animals and catching and raising bugs (the multi-legged ones.) I am a very lucky guy to have such a great child!
